Reception

Welcome to Reception!

The Reception pupils have had an exciting start to the school year and are familiarising themselves with the learning environment.

Our main focus for the start of this half term will be settling the pupils into a regular and predictable routine and encouraging them to become independent learners and individuals.

In Literacy the children will be introduced to ‘The Power of Reading’, where they will be introduced to a story book called ‘So Much’ by Trish Cooke. During their literacy lessons, the pupils will be using the pictures to develop their prediction skills, using their own experiences to relate to what is happening in the story and using their memory to recall the different parts of the story.

Using the ‘Read Write Inc.’ Phonics scheme, pupils will be learning the sounds associated with each letter of the alphabet and will begin to use these letter sounds in their writing. Following this, they will be working in small groups to practice their letter formation and hand writing skills. Pupils will using their phonics skills to begin to recognise familiar words and begin to read these words during focussed lesson time and during their play. Pupils will gain confidence in word reading by re-reading key words and phrases they will become familiar with throughout the half term.

One of the role-play areas in Reception is a Home, where the pupils will have the opportunity to act out real life experiences from their own home. They will discuss their families and their community as well as beginning to understand that people have different beliefs and celebrate in different ways.

Another role-play area that the children will have the opportunity to explore is the hospital. in which they will have the opportunity to take on the roles of the patient and the doctors/nurses. Here the children can book their appointment, wait in the waiting room, talk about their ailments and be treated by the doctor. As the half term goes by, the children will be able talk about different types of procedures such as x-rays and jabs and buy medicine using money.

In the outdoor area there is a ‘Mechanics’ role-play area where pupils will have the opportunity to drive and fix their cars. This will provide chances to focus on handling tools safely and improve their motor skills, use money to pay for repairs and take on the role of an important part of the community.

In Maths, pupils will begin the half term looking at sorting, matching and comparing items and amounts. This will help develop the skill of finding similarities and differences between two groups. From this, the children will be looking at different amounts and using their subitising skills to decide if a group has more or fewer than another.

We are looking forward to a busy and exciting term ahead.

WE LOVE SCHOOL!
