Year 1: Aqua and Sapphire

Year 1

In Year 1 this term our focus book will be ‘Traction Man’. It is a wonderful story about a toy named Traction Man who comes to life and goes on exciting adventures!

Within our Power of Reading topic we will be learning to write in sentences. We will be using capital letters, full stops and finger spaces in our writing and using this to write our won captions. We’ll also begin to look at conjunctions through ‘and’, we’ll be exploring how it is used and how it effects our writing.

Through our maths curriculum we will be learning how to count to 20 and how to count to 100 in 20s. We will be using manipulatives to allow pupils to count using real life objects and will be exploring numbers through songs as well.

We are working scientifically to identify how people change as they get older and the difference between a baby and an adult. We will collect data, look for patterns and carry out investigations withjn the unit.

Through our history topic we are looking at timelines and how we can create timelines about our lives and our memories. We will be looking at past and present within our own lives and how different people might experience different events based on their age.

In Design and Technology we will be making our own Windmills and looking at the purpose of windmills and why they might help our environment.

In RE our unit question is ‘How do we know we belong?’ we will be exploring what belonging means and what it means within Christianity and Gurmat. We will look at different festivals that show belonging and will look at different religious symbols and what they mean within their respected religions.

In PSHE we will be learning about what is similar and different about us and our friends and what makes us special.

PE will be every Tuesday afternoon and the children must have the appropriate kit and we advise all aspects of uniform to be labelled with your child’s name and class.

We look forward to an exciting Autumn term in Year 1.
