Year 3
Welcome to Year 3! We are looking forward to all the amazing achievements by the pupils this year.
Our Power of Reading book this half term is ‘Ug’. Ug and his parents are living in the Stone Age. And that means stone blankets, stone cold food, an even colder cave and, worst of all, hard stone trousers! Being an inquisitive and intelligent child, Ug suggests a series of modifications to improve the quality of family life.
Pupils will be making predictions about what the book is about using the front cover. Pupils will look at the illustrations of the story and discuss how this contributes to the meaning. Through the story, pupils will develop an understanding of The Stone Age which will coincide with their History learning.
Pupils will learn about the Stone Age through to the Iron Age. Pupils will investigate different artefacts which help us understand what happened in the past. Pupils will decide whether they would have liked to be alive in the Stone Age and explain why.
In Science, pupils will study ‘Keeping Healthy’. Pupils will create a ‘gym’ atmosphere where they will learn to be personal trainers. Pupils will study the food groups and how they contribute to a healthy diet. They will study the body, including bones and muscles and how these work together to allow the body to move.
Alongside this, in DT, pupils will study cooking and nutrition. Pupils will look at foods and their origins, moving onto seasonal foods. Pupils will then taste different foods, learning how to evaluate them effectively.
Pupils will study Gurmat and Christianity this half term with a focus on ‘Does it matter what we wear?’. Pupils will look at their own identify, moving onto religious garments and what importance these have.
In PSHE, pupils will study friendship. Pupils will discuss what makes a good friend and how friendships are maintained. Pupils will look at how to solve friendship issues and practise scenarios to develop their understanding of problem solving.
In Music, pupils will look at writing music down. Pupils will learn different songs and be able to recognise the rhythm, beat and tempo of different parts of the song. This will build up to a performance for them at the end of the half term.
In computing, pupils will look at coding. Pupils will understand how to enter algorhytms into a computer to enable it to carry out an instruction. Pupils will then move onto learning about keeping safe online and who they can go to for help and advice.
In Spanish, pupils will learn the Spanish greetings and when it is appropriate to use these. They will also look at colours and numbers.
P.E. will be on a Wednesday afternoon, so please ensure pupils come in the correct PE kit on this day.
If you ever have any questions or queries, please do speak to a member of the Year 3 team.
