Year 4
Welcome back everyone and welcome to Year 4!
Our power Of Reading book is called ‘Rhythm of the Rain’; the story is about a boy called Isaac who is very curious about water and where it goes and what it does. During lessons pupils will be writing for different purposes and audiences such as poetry, descriptive writing and non-fiction texts about water.
Pupils will be learning about place value and how this supports them which column addition and subtraction. Pupils will be learning about how to identify addends, regroup and choose the most effective strategy to solve a variety of word problems. Pupils will also be looking at numbers to 10,000. During this, pupils will be taught different strategies to add and subtract multiples of 100, how to compare different four digit numbers and calculate efficiently by using knowledge of place value, addition and subtraction.
As part of the science curriculum, pupils will be looking at electricity, they will be able to identify different appliances that run on electricity, and they will construct simple series electrical circuits and identify key components. Pupils will also work scientifically by observing and planning and creating a practical enquire to help them recognise and identify common conductors and insulators.
How children’s lives have changed is the key question pupils will be able to answer in their history lessons this half term. Pupils will be able to make inferences and deductions from a variety of sources. Pupils will be able to compare their current lives to the lives of children in Tudor and Victorian times, by explaining the different roles children had. Pupils will be able to discuss different leisure activities and identify past diseases children used to have and how effective the treatments used to be.
During art lessons, pupil are looking at different drawing styles, using different techniques but focusing on shading, proportions, contrast and tones. Pupils will be using different mediums to create their own compositions such as charcoal, sketching pencils, wax and scissors.
In PSHE, pupils will think about what skills, interests and strengths they have. They will consider how their personal attributes, strengths, skills and interests contribute to their self-esteem and learn how to set themselves personal goals.
Pupils will explore combinations of different timbres and think about how different timbres can be descriptive in music lessons. They will then use this knowledge to create an introduction for a song.
During RE pupils will be answering the question Who do we look to for inspiration and why? Pupils will be learning about how Jesus is inspirational to Christians and why Prophet Mouhammad (PBUH) is inspiration to Muslims and how he inspired his followers.
Pupils will build on their knowledge of Spanish by naming items in school as well as recapping on their knowledge of numbers.
In computing, pupils will be learning about coding on Purple Mash, understanding the sprites, coding blocks and how coding can manipulate a sprite to move.
We would like to welcome the children and parents into Year 4 and hope they settle in well. Just a reminder that Wednesday is our PE day, so please ensure your child is wearing the correct kit on this day and that pupils in Emerald Class bring their swimming kit to school.
