At Edward Pauling, learning Spanish gives children the opportunity to develop a love of languages and an appreciation of Spanish-speaking cultures. Through engaging and progressive lessons, pupils build their confidence in communicating in Spanish and develop the foundations for successful language learning.
Children develop their skills across listening, speaking, reading and writing, building a growing bank of vocabulary, phrases and sentence structures. They learn to understand and respond to spoken and written Spanish, ask and answer questions, give opinions and take part in conversations and role-play activities.
Pupils develop their phonics, pronunciation and intonation, learning to recognise and reproduce the sounds of Spanish accurately. They explore patterns in language, including nouns, articles, adjectives and verbs, and begin to understand how Spanish grammar works. As their knowledge develops, children are encouraged to adapt and manipulate language to express their own ideas.
Through learning about Spanish-speaking countries and communities, pupils develop cultural awareness and curiosity, making comparisons with their own lives and experiences. Our aim is to develop confident, enthusiastic and resilient linguists who are willing to have a go, learn from mistakes and enjoy communicating in another language.
