Young Carers

A young carer is someone under 18 who helps look after a family member or friend who is ill, disabled, has a mental health condition, or struggles with alcohol or drug use. Young carers might help with everyday tasks - like cooking, cleaning, shopping, or looking after brothers and sisters. They may also give emotional support, remind someone to take medication, or help them move around. Being a young carer can be rewarding, but it can also be challenging. If you think you might be a young carer, support is available, and you don’t have to manage everything alone.

Our school is committed to recognising and supporting young carers - students who help look after a family member at home. We aim to ensure they feel understood, valued, and never alone in balancing their responsibilities with their education.

We provide a safe place where young carers can talk to trusted staff, access practical help, and receive flexibility when home life affects their school day. We work to raise awareness among staff and peers so young carers are treated with empathy and respect.

Above all, we aim to give young carers the opportunities, stability, and encouragement they need to thrive - at school, at home, and in their futures.
