The National Year of Reading 2026—is a nationwide, year-long campaign launched to celebrate reading and tackle falling levels of reading for pleasure across the country. It’s taking place throughout January–December 2026 and involves people of all ages, communities, schools, families, libraries and organisations.
The official slogan for the year is “Go All In”—with the tagline “If you’re into it, read into it.” This sums up the idea that reading doesn’t have to be a chore: you can let your interests lead you into reading more, whether that’s through sports, science, film tie-ins, cooking blogs, storytelling or anything else you love.
The main aims of the National Year of Reading 2026 are to:
Year 6 Book Club
The Hounslow Junior Book Club at our school is a welcoming and engaging space where pupils come together to share their love of reading. Run weekly during lunchtime in the library, the club is organised by dedicated teachers and supported by older student reading ambassadors who help lead discussions. Each half term, members vote on a new book to read, exploring a mix of classic children’s literature and contemporary stories. Sessions include group discussions, creative activities such as illustrating favourite scenes, and occasional quizzes or dramatic read-alouds to bring the stories to life. The club encourages confidence, teamwork, and a genuine enjoyment of books, making it a valued part of school life.
Lunchtime Book Club
Lunchtime Book Club runs every Friday at lunch in Mrs. Evan's classroom - Scarlet Class. It is first come, first served. All children are welcome. There are many books to choose including comics, magazines, chapter books and picture books. Our book club helpers hand out bookmarks to children who have read to them.
Book Week including World Book Day
Book Week (WB 2.3.2026) is celebrating World Book Day all week long. Our theme is "Storytellers". There is a range of activities going on everyday from sharing our favourite books to creating scripts for a move adaptation to dressing up as our favourite book characters.
After School Storytime
After School Storytime returns Friday 6th March with our EYFS and SEN team reading "The Hungry Caterpillar"! This is a fun and interactive storytelling event in the school hall watching teachers tell and act out their favourite stories. All are welcome to attend!
