At Edward Pauling Primary School, Design and Technology inspires children to become creative, curious and confident designers, makers and problem-solvers. Through practical, hands-on experiences, pupils learn to design, make, evaluate and improve products for real-life purposes and users.

Following the Kapow Primary scheme, children develop a broad range of skills across structures, mechanisms and mechanical systems, textiles, cooking and nutrition, electrical systems and the digital world. They learn to explore and select appropriate materials, tools and techniques, develop and communicate design ideas, and make purposeful products with increasing independence.

Our pupils develop practical skills such as cutting, joining, shaping, sewing, constructing, strengthening structures, creating and testing mechanisms, preparing and cooking food, investigating electrical circuits and using digital technology to design and solve problems.

Children are encouraged to test, evaluate and refine their ideas, learning that designers and engineers use creativity, perseverance and problem-solving to improve their work. Through a progressive curriculum, pupils build on previous knowledge and develop the confidence and technical understanding to design solutions that are functional, innovative and fit for purpose.
