In Year 1 this term, our Power of Reading book is ‘The Three Little Pigs’. It is a wonderful fairy-tale about three pigs who build three houses of different materials, which links to our Science topic of materials but will also support learning in all areas of the curriculum.
In English, we will be learning to sequence by putting events in order. Stories often have a beginning, middle and an end and we will be looking at how we can recognise this. We will also begin to look at descriptive language, again linking to our focus book ‘The Three Little Pigs’.
In Maths, pupils will learn about subtraction and the different methods that can be used to find an answer. Pupils will continue to use pictorial representations and a range of resources to support their learning. They will also look at height and length by comparing, describing and solving practical problems.
In Science, Year 1 will work scientifically to identify, describe and classify materials. They will begin to identify the properties of various materials and use investigations to test a material’s properties.
In Humanities, pupils will name and locate the four countries and capital cities of the UK and its surrounding seas. They will also explore the difference between human and physical geography, paying particular attention to our local area.
Linking to our Power of Reading text, pupils will also develop their drawing skills by looking at drawings of buildings, including those designed by Sir Christopher Wren our significant individual. In DT, pupils will design and build models of houses.
PE will be every Monday afternoon so pupils must have the appropriate kit and we advise all aspects of uniform should be labelled with your child’s name and class.
We look forward to another wonderful half term in Year 1.
