Reception: Red Blue

This term our focus book will be ‘The Gruffalo’ and we will explore the topic of ‘Mini-Beasts’ through a book called ‘Yucky Worms.’

Through ‘The Gruffalo’, we will explore the character of the ‘Mouse’ and discuss the characters’ feelings and appearances. We will use freeze frames to talk about characters’ feelings and, through the use of thought bubbles, we will be writing down the thoughts of the characters at different points throughout the story.

This term the pupils will be given lots of opportunities to practice writing simple sentences about the key characters and events and will move onto writing an alternative ending or their own version of ‘The Gruffalo.’

In the outdoor area the pupils will be able to investigate mini-beasts and use non-fiction books to find out more about the mini-beasts they have found. Our focus will be on worms and how to look after a worm.

Also in our outdoor area in the mud kitchen we will be following instructions to make scrambled snake, mouse on toast and owl ice cream based on the recipes from ‘The Gruffalo.’

In Maths, we will be learning about time and using a clock to recognise ‘o’clock’ and ‘half-past’. Whilst continuing to consolidate number recognition, order and simple calculations, we will be applying our knowledge to solve simple problems including doubling, halving and sharing.

In Red Class our role play area will change into a fruit and vegetable shop. The pupils will have the opportunity to talk about healthy eating and lifestyle choices. The pupils will use money to buy fruits and vegetables and apply their maths skills to add prices together and pay for items using 1p, 2p, 5p and 10p coins.

In Blue Class our role play area will become a ‘fix it’ shop where the pupils will be able to use a variety of tools to fix different objects such as old computers, mobile phones, broken books and toys. We will write instructions for how to fix an item and also using money to pay the services to fix items.

We Love School!

We have been building castles using junk modelling materials, wooden blocks and our new outdoor construction resources! We have made flags too to put on our castles.

We learnt about where the Queen rules and painted some of the flags from these countries.

We have been learning about the Queen and her family. We have drawn self portraits of the members of the Royal Family.

In Reception we have been learning about the crown jewels and have made our own crowns. We painted them silver or gold and decorated them with shiny materials. We enjoyed pretending to be King's and Queen's.

In Maths we have been looking at symmetrical patterns and have had a go at making our own.

We have been reading facts about the minibeasts and matching the fact to the correct minibeast.

In the outdoor area we have been applying our calculation skills to work out our score in a game of bowling! We have been recording our score and using the 100 square to help us add and subtract.

For topic 'minibeasts' we have been learning about worms! We have been searching for worms in the bug garden and have made our own wormery so we can watch the worms make tunnels.

We have been reading the story of the Gruffalo. We learnt about the characters and events and wrote our own stories about the Gruffalo.

We have been looking at patterns, and repeating patterns in particular in our maths lessons, and money in the shops, as well as using the dominoes and dice and skittles to keep scores (by using addition) and to say more and less.

In literacy we have been reading and retelling the story of the Gruffalo.

During walt time, we have been enjoying our new gym that we have installed in Red class to become fit and healthy (using the trampoline, weights and exercise ball). We also made a slide outside and wrote out the safety rules for this.

In Maths we have been learning about doubling and halving. We have also been using Numicon to find different ways of making 10.

Pupils have been using the Vets role play area to look after the sick animals. They have put bandages on the animals and have written prescriptions to make them better!

The pupils in Reception created their own 'Bog Baby' and wrote a sentence to describe their 'Bog Baby.'

We also loved joining in with the sports relief mile!

We have been looking at different habitats, and making our own in our tough spot.

We have been looking after our pets in our vetinary Surgery.

In maths we have been using number lines to do simple addition and playing bingo.

We have been enjoying our new mud kitchen.

We explored ice and discussed how ice is made and what happens when it melts.

Reception pupils used a big book and story map to retell the story of Jack and the Beanstalk with actions.

The pupils in Reception created a Garden Centre. The pupils were able to identify how much items cost using a price list and count out the correct number of coins to pay for thier items.

In Reception, children were adding using different resources and photos of children learning about different celebrations.
