Welcome to Year 3!

Welcome back to school! We hope you all have had an enjoyable, restful half-term.

This summer term, we will be continuing with our topic of What’s On The Menu? This unit focuses on healthy eating, food from all over the world, fair trade farming and the history of food.

In Literacy this term we will be focusing on the novel ‘The Bad Beginning’ from A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket. We be reading the story in class and writing letters, diary entries, monologues from the point of view of certain characters.

In Maths we will be focusing on 2D shapes and symmetry. We will also be learning about area. As always, we request that you continue to practice the multiplication tables with your child and telling the time.

In Science we will be starting our new topic ‘Forces’. We will be concentrating on working scientifically, carrying out fair tests and writing up investigations.

Year 3 pupils will continue to have weekly recorder lessons on a Tuesday afternoon. Children may bring home their recorders on Tuesday to practice, but they must be returned to school by Friday at the latest. Later in the term, there will be a Year 3 recorder concert which we will update you on closer to the date.

A reminder that homework will continue to go home on a Thursday and it is to be returned on a Tuesday. For the summer term, we request that your child completes two high quality pieces of work. Thank you for your continued support with the homework, and a special thank you for the fantastic Amazon Rainforest we received.

Swimming lessons and PE will continue as normal, with all of Indigo class and half of Lilac class attending swimming. Please remember to send your child to school with their correct P.E. or swimming kits every Wednesday.

On Thursday 2nd July, Violet class with half of Lilac class will be traveling to Surrey Dock’s Farm in Surrey, to link with our IPC topic, for our final school trip. The rest of the students will be going on Friday 3rd July. If you are interested in helping out with this trip, please let your child’s teacher know.

As always, thank you for your continued support. We are looking forward to our final two months of school, which we are confident will be filled with learning and enjoyment.

We love school!

This week we learnt about scurvy and how it affected sailors. We found out that marmalade and jam became very popular with sailors when they discovered how important vitamin c was to their diets. Today we created our very own jam! We used strawberries, sugar, liquid pectin and lemon juice.

In IPC, as part of our topic 'What's on the Menu' we carried out some market research. We tasted different types of chocolate and rated them on their packaging, flavour, appearance and price. We then conducted a survey to find out what was most popular. Using this information, we then designed the packaging for our own products with a specific target market in mind.

This week Year 3 have started our new topic 'What's on the Menu?'. To introduce this topic, we had a big picnic! Each child was responsible for making something for our healthy picnic. The children decided to make jam sandwiches, cheese sandwiches, fruit salad and rice krispie cakes. After preparing the food, we went outside to the playground to have our picnic in the sunshine. The teachers were in charge of serving the food! Next week, the children will write instructions to teach others how to prepare the foods they made.

In IPC we imagined we were back in the Stone Age. We had to create a shelter to live in. We used our natural environment and equipment from the Playpod. Afterwards, we viewed all the other shelters. We reflected on what worked well and evaluated what we could have done differently. We also went on a scavenger hunt to find food to eat.

In IPC we have been looking at dinosaur fossils. We learned how fossils are formed and we created fossils of our own hands! We then wrote the instructions for making the fossils.

In year 3 we have been learning about World War 2. We used Laptops and books to research The Blitz. In Maths we learnt about rationing, we used our knowledge of division to ration and make jam sandwiches. We constructed famous well known London buildings that were destroyed during The Blitz. We have also thought about all of the children that were evacuated during the war, and the emotions that they went through.
