Year 2 are very excited to start the second half of the term learning creatively through a book called ‘Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters‘.
We will be comparing different cultures between England and Zimbabwe and identifying countries from around the word on a map. We will also be developing our understanding of true beauty and learn how our actions can lead to different consequences.
In literacy will be learning about riddles. We will explore the language features and create our own riddles using exclamations, questions and noun phrases. Our Power of Reading text for the final half term will be ‘Lila and the Secret of Rain’. We will be learning to understand the characters in the story and the importance of descriptive language when describing the setting.
In numeracy, we will be using our knowledge of place value, mental and written strategies to solve a range of mathematical investigations. We will be working in groups to find the quickest solutions and sharing different methods to solve problems. We will applying our knowledge of number bonds, family facts and timetables tables.
Continuing from our creative week, we will be locating the continents and oceans of the world in humanities. We will be comparing geographical similarities and differences through studying the physical and human features, for example temperature and land in each area. Towards the end of the year, we will be locating beaches in the UK and other places, discussing the different uses a beach may heave and why. To develop our understanding of ‘deserts, beaches and oceans’, Year 2 will be exploring a beach in the UK called Littlehampton – We are very excited for our school trip!
In science, we will be learning about plants. We will be observing and describing how plants grow, using new vocabulary such as ‘germination’. We will be investigating the process of germination and the reason for it. We will be completing our own scientific investigation using cress seeds and use a magnifying glass to observe how cress grow over a weekly period. We will then explore and develop our understanding of what plants need to survive and grow. Following from this, we will be learning to understand the pollination process and how plants reproduce to make more plants.
